English
The overall aim of the English curriculum is to enable all of our pupils to develop their ability to use and understand the English language. At St Berteline’s, we recognise that language is essential to learning and that the development of English is taking place in every lesson of the day because it is our basic communication medium. English is not perceived as a ’bolted on’ addition to the curriculum but as an implicit part of the teaching and learning which goes on each day in every curriculum area. This does not imply that it is not taught in a structured, progressive and rigorous way; fundamentally, we believe that spoken language underpins the development of reading and writing and therefore we take every opportunity to improve our children's spoken grammar and syntax.
